Welcome to a new edition of evil:austria!

This time there is something new we offer. Due to request by readers, we will from now on also give information regarding the sources at the end of each article, and we hope to be of assistance with this also to those people who do not trust us completely ;))

Once again, for newcomers, an explanation what this newsletter is about and why we produce it:

evil:austria is our monthly newsletter providing information about the situation in Austria (and regarding the consequences of FPOe/OeVP government). We decided to produce this newsletter since we realized that knowledge regarding the actual situation in Austria is not very widespread abroad. The government, after discussions about EU-"sanctions" against Austria were dropped, succeeded in removing the daily insanity from the attention of the international public. Meanwhile "sanctions" have been lifted, which almost all political groups here celebrated as a victory, and the "interest" taken in the development in Austria has decreased even more. The "normalisation" of the right-wing/right-extreme government continues, and therefore information about the aggravation of the situation in Austria is even more important. It is therefore highly desired that you spread this newsletter as widely as possible, so that as many people as possible get to know about the situation in Austria. So please spread, spread, spread this. Of course you may also use this material (also in excerpts) for magazines and papers, but we would be glad if you sent us a short mail in this case.

After FPOe/OeVP coalition finished the issue of financial demands of NS victims - according to Minister of Finances Grasser (FPOe) with the so- called laws of "reconciliation" and for a "funds of damages", it saw to an equal treatment of their "own people" (Haider's words), with the parliamentary support of the Social Democrats. First they passed a "law for the compensation of Austrian P.O.W.s" which provides an annual 80 Million ATS to former soldiers of Wehrmacht and SS who were P.O.W.s in Eastern European countries.

In summer 2001, they began to establish a "Funds for Displaced Persons": Austria will support the associations of the group of "Volksdeutsche" relocated in 1945 with a total of 7,27 million EURO. This funds might become a source of funding for rightwing extreme activities, since it will be the Vienna "Haus der Heimat" [house of native country] to benefit mostly from this funds. And this place is more than just a centre for displaced persons, as events organised by "Neuer Klub" [new club] are taking place there.

This "Neuer Klub" (NK) was founded in 1957 by former Nazis and rightwing conservatives. Its statutes up to the 70ies only accepted "male members belonging to the German people".. Since 1997, NK"s club evenings take place in this "Haus der Heimat", and the list of speakers there in wide parts are a "Who"s Who" of German and Austrian rightwing extremism:

Magister [an academic title] Martin Hobek: FPOe politician in Vienna, author of the rightwing extreme magazines "Aula" and "Eckartbote"

Dr. Lothar Hoebelt: FPOe historian, author with "Aula", in 1993, appearance as a speaker with "Verein Dichterstein Offenhausen" which meanwhile was banned for violating the law against taking up NS activities

Dipl.Ing. Walter Lueftl: author of an "expertise" which denies the existence of gas chambers in the NS concentration camps

Retired Brigadier Walther Gross: author of a magazine of "AFP- Informationen", author with "Aula" and "fakten", several appearances as a speaker with AFP"s "Politische Akademie" [political academy]. (More info obtainable at the link below)

[2] State support for rightwing extremists (2)
****************************************************************

FPOe/OeVP government supports the rightwing extreme weekly paper "Zur Zeit" with some EURO 58,000 from the funds to support the press. The sum apparently already paid for "Zur Zeit" proves what to think of the introduction to the government"s statement which President Klestil forced upon the party leaders Haider and Schuessel. In this intro, the FPOe/OeVP coalition claimed it intended to "fight and reject all forms of discrimination, intolerance, and hate rhetoric with resolve". They further contended they were working "for an Austria with offers no room for xenophobia, anti-semitism, and racism".

"Zur Zeit" is a follow-up of the Austrian edition of the German rightwing extreme paper "Junge Freiheit" [young freedom]; its editor Andreas Moelzer at the moment still holds a job as a cultural advisor to Joerg Haider in Carinthia.

[3] Anti-Racism held high in Austria
****************************************************************

Fighting racism is an important issue in Austria, and this is indicated by the choice of persons representing Austria at the UN world conference against racism. Only rank-and-file officials were sent to Durban, the Foreign Secretary avoided to go. There were also no representatives from NGOs in the Austrian delegation. An incident in the aftermath of the conference sheds further light on the overall image: when returning from Durban to Vienna airport Schwechat, the president of the "Association for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa" got stopped by police without reason, five "white" persons accompanying him were allowed to pass without controls.

[4] Cackling hens or muezzin?

"We prefer cackling hens over the call of a muezzin" - thus quoth SPOe major of the town of Ansfeld in a radio interview. After harsh criticism from SPOe youth organisation and the Greens, he talked about a "misunderstanding" and he was sorry if anyone felt aggrieved. And he had an Ungarian mother himself. Oh yes, sure, so he cannot be racist....

[5] News regarding the informers" affair

Legal action against Leopold Mayerhoffer, MP in Lower Austria, has been dropped by the attorney general. After the judge asked for a different assignment due to severe pressure being exerted on him a few weeks ago, also investigations against Vienna FPOe politicians Michael Kreissl and Hilmar Kabas do not progress. A decision about a trial will be made only this autumn, but FPOe spokesperson on security matters Kreissl says he "fully trusts" the legal apparatus.

Which comes as no surprise, since Minister of InJustice Boehmdorfer is a member of the same party, and the attorney general for Vienna and Lower Austria, a gentleman by the name of Eisenmenger, is an active member of a rightwing fraternity.....

The Minstry of InJustice, by supervising who will be assigned to which post, is in a position to effect deliberate tranfers of judges and therefore to effect political pressure. This most probably ascertains that the government will also enjoy the right kind of judges in future trials...

[7] A fine for kicking a homeless person
****************************************************************

Two Nazi skinheads severely kicked a homeless person at a train station in Vorarlberg. After being arrested, both admitted to adhere to rightwing opinions. They were sentenced to a fine, some of it under probation terms. They only had to pay EURO 300 to the homeless person - apparently the physical unharmedness of a homeless person does not cost more than this.

[8] Neo-Nazis and their lawyers
****************************************************************

In the town of Wels, a youth received a probational sentence due to "reintroducing national-socialist activities", two more persons were aquitted. So far, this is nothing much to write home about - but what is indeed remarkable is what their lawyer said in court: He argued that the law banning the reintroduction of national-socialist activities was not "up to date" any longer. Courts were practicising an "ideological jurisdiction" and requested the jury not to sentence anyone "for holding different opinions".

[9] Representative of Wymyn's Opportunity Bureau gagged

The chairwomyn of the Wymyn's Opportunity Bureau of the federal state of Salzburg intended to publish, together with several other wymyn's representatives, their criticism of the plan to revise the law on child care. But this did no happen, since her boss forbid her to take part in the press conference.

[10] Haider instigating in the town of Ried
****************************************************************

Carinthian Prime Minister and "simple party member" Joerg Haider, like other politicians, held a speech in a tent during the Ried fair. His usual attacks against trade unions and SPOe politicians were to be heard, and he again mentioned the ancient attacks about German Foreign Sec Joschka Fischer being a terrorist. Members of People's Theatre Caravan (cf evil:austria 0801) he attributed as "scum" on whom tax funds are being spent. He also repeated his demand for a plebiscite on Eastern European countries joining EU and praised the "good work" done by FPOe regarding a stricter drug politics.

[11] Austrian knowledge of hystory....
****************************************************************

...seems to be lacking. So once again an old gym got redecorated, i.e. old frescoes were being refreshed, including symbols similar to swastikas and an inscription mentioning the year 1933. The mayor responsible (member of SPOe) does not see any problem with this fresco by German Turnerbund.

[12] Neo-Nazi march and concert in Vorarlberg
****************************************************************

On Aug 4, approx. 100 Neo-Nazis - mainly belonging to the bonehead-scene- marched through the city of Bregenz to commemorate a fellow Nazi who, in 1999, committed suicide in prison. At night there was a concert with the wellknown Nazi bands "Noie Werte" and "Razors Edge". More than 250 boneheads and other Neo-Nazis from Austria and abroad enjoyed the loud Nazi rock. While Vorarlberg police simply watched doing nothing, German authorities prior to the concert busted several boneheads trying to cross the border and confiscated numerous NS material, including CDs and such.

[13] Neo-Nazi cadres cooperating within AFP
****************************************************************

While rightwing extreme "Workgroup for Democratic Politics" (AFP) keep a low profile on their announcements regarding their "36th Political Academie - taking place from Oct 19-21 in the Salzburg town of Lungau -, their German fellows are more outspoken. Therefore it is thanks to "Deutsche Stimme" [German Voice] that the list of speakers there was made public. One of them will be Sascha Rossmueller who is chairperson of "Junge Nationaldemokraten" [Young National Democrats - JN] and managing director of NPD in Bavaria. He was a militant in the "National Block" (NB) banned in 1993. Rossmueller's being elected for JN chairperson was commented by Bavarian intelligence service as a definite proof of "the Neo- Nazi orientation of JN". German news magazine DER SPIEGEL reported that Rossmueller, in July 1998, told his fellows how to deal with presently governing politicians after a so-called national revolution: "None of them will escape us, we will see to that. All airports and roads leading out of the country will be blocked. And then, the rope will be waiting for them."

[14] Scandal about student groups
****************************************************************

After elections to the students" parliament at Graz university, the representatives of FPOe-OeVP lost their majority. Their successors then discovered that ATS 1.2 million (approx. EURO 90,000) had not been used in accordance with laws. The sum had been spent on food, in restaurants, on wine-tasting, on paying parking fees, and for parties thrown by these factions in the students" parliament. The misconduct has been reported to the Attorney General.

[15] Haider defeated in court again
****************************************************************

Joerg Haider sued SPOe budget spokesman Edlinger, because Edlinger, in a letter to the editor last year, linked EU sanctions to "repeated fascistoid remarks" by Haider and FPOe politicians. Edlinger was able to prove that the characterization "fascistoid" was in accordance with acceptable political criticism.
