Welcome to the new edition of evil:austria!

Once again the bulletin is full of the reality of the partly fascist governed Austria, it is interesting as always, although we'd prefer there were less things to report about.

Special thanks to everybody who participated in the international day of action re 1 year FPOe in the government. There was a very "tame" march in Vienna this day, with a participation of between 6,000 and 10,000 persons, depending on who did the counting.

Once again, for newcomers, an explanation what this newsletter is about and why we produce it:

evil:austria is our monthly newsletter providing information about the situation in Austria (and regarding the consequences of FPOe/OeVP government). We decided to produce this newsletter since we realized that knowledge regarding the actual situation in Austria is not very widespread abroad. The government, after discussions about EU-'sanctions' against Austria were dropped, succeeded in removing the daily insanity from the attention of the international public. Meanwhile 'sanctions' have been lifted, which almost all political groups here celebrated as a victory, and the 'interest' taken in the development in Austria has decreased even more. The 'normalisation' of the right-wing/right-extreme government continues, and therefore information about the aggravation of the situation in Austria is even more important. It is therefore highly desired that you spread this newsletter as widely as possible, so that as many people as possible get to know about the situation in Austria. So please spread, spread, spread this. Of course you may also use this material (also in excerpts) for magazines and papers, but we would be glad if you sent us a short mail in this case.

Chairperson of Vienna FPOe, Hilmar - choc pie - Kabas (cf almost all past issues of evil:austria) now won't be heading the election campaign in the Vienna elections. Apparently the politician, known for visits to brothels, the informer's affair, for saying "Hump" or "Dump" and known as a victim of chocolate pies, was not viewed to be the right person by FPOe. Before resigning from running for office, Kabas has been questioned by police in connection with the informer's affair.

[2] Vienna FP candidate

On Jan 21, 2001, FPOe had their New Year's Meeting in Vienna. At this meeting, they presentend the successor of Hilmar Kabas as a candidate in Vienna elections: Helene Partik-Pable. For persons keeping an eye on the far-right scene, she is a familiar face. She often produced racist and anti-semitic comments: e.g. when Marcus Omofuma died (cf. below), she said during a debate in parliament: "... Just ask police officers what Black Africans are like! They don't just look different, as has been said today, but they are different, and in particular, they are very aggressive. This apparently is the nature of these people..." Regarding civil service done at places for the commemoration of the holocaust, she said: "I don't see why persons doing civilian service will look after commemoration plates in Jerusalem when they are needed urgently here to look after handicapped persons..."

Her first action regarding her election campaign was a query in parliament which intended to criminalize persons protesting against the government. She also demanded a ban on protesters wearing masks. As an aside: Helene Partik-Pable is a former judge...

[3] New Year's Meeting of FPOe

During FPOe's New Year's Meeting, Joerg Haider once again showed what he thinks about democracy: He demanded a ban on protest marches for opponents of the government. (Home Secretary Strasser (OeVP), however, did not agree: "It is strange that some people want to chose who may do a protest march and who may not...")

Haider furthermore expressed some sympathy for the Neo-Nazi scene: "In Austria, little Schimanek is sent to prison for 8 years because he did a little militia training. In Germany, a RAF-sympathizer may become Foreign Secretary." "Little Schimanek", Hans-Joerg Schimanek Jr., son of an FPOe politician, declared himself a National Socialist. He was a leading member of Gottfried Kuessel's (cf evil:austria 0101) Neo-Nazi organisation VAPO which was later banned, and participated, together with Kuessel, in militia trainings. He was sentenced for illegal possession of arms and for having violated the law banning Nazi activities. During this "unimportant militia training" Schimanek took part in, participants trained how to kill opponents fast by cutting throats. ....

[4] Humyn beings as quotas

For several months now, the governing parties have argued about an additional immigration quota for "technological key personnel". Finally, FPOe won. The quota for further immigrants will remain unchanged at 8,518 persons for Austria for the year 2001. Changes have been effected regarding the composition of this quota, however: 5,490 persons may get in to reunite families, the quota for "top personnel" has been agreed at 1,613 persons, and there will be only 815 persons admitted as "normal" immigrants...

[5] Joerg Haider declares unpopular persons mental cases
****************************************************************

After the designated head of Carinthian Cultural Bureau, Stojan, has been sent home by Haider before taking up work in this office, he protested strongly. So, on the evening of Jan 21, police knocked at his door and took him to a psychiatrist check. The doctor, however, could not establish any "disturbances".
Now Herr Stojan isn't what you call a nice person (former secretary of far right OeVP's Alois Mock), and has complained about too many "Reds" working in the Cultural Bureau. He also thought a lot of Haider until recently, and intends to have a "talk from man to man" about this with Haider. The way Carinthian Prime Minister handled this gives an impression on what he is prepared to do when a subject holds different views than the king of the country.

[6] FPOe powerplay
****************************************************************

FPOe never was the good friend of trade unions and social insurance, which is why these are still dominated by SPOe resp. are important institutions for workers.
After increasing criticism with the head of board of directors of Central Association of Social Insurances and president of the Trade Union of Private Employees, Herr Salmutter, Salmutter was planned to be replaced by FP-member Rainhard Gaugg (who some years ago got known for spelling the word 'Nazi' - new, attractive, determined, full of ideas). Gaugg immediately explained his plans for social insurance: to get rid of it, which is a long-time political key issue of FPOe. Vice Chancellor Riess-Passer (FPOe) said Salmutter was "not fit" and is determined to have him replaced. Trade Unions were not amused, and even some people from big business were not too happy about this attempt, even Joerg Haider thought it was "too unsubtle". Apparently FPOe feels embarassed when they are caught in the middle of taking over power. Again OeVP had only little comments to contribute, except for Secretary of the Economy Bartenstein who said, Salmutter shouldn't have criticized the government. Authoritarian tendencies get stronger and stronger.
FPOe also tries to purge the last SPOe functionaries from the remnants of state-owned industry, the OeIAG [Austrian Industrial Corporation]. Its president Rudolf Streicher will be replaced, too. It seems there are only friends of FPOe chief candidate Thomas Prinzhorn in industry. FP power-sets apparently prepare to take over essential parts of society. A reconstruction of society according to FPOe's ideas is at hands. This has taken just about one year.

[7] FPOe punishes ...
****************************************************************

... all persons criticizing them: e.g. well-known political scientist Anton Pelinka (cf evil:austria 0600). Pelinka was sacked from Fulbright-Commission who is responsible for the exchange of professors between USA and Austria. Pelinka fell victim to a veto by FPOe.

[8] FPOe steals
****************************************************************

During the Vienna election campaign, FPOe had a picket titled "Against the Current". The usual slogans were replaced by arrows with artistic characteristics: a huge blue arrow (blue - FPOe) gets in the way of a multitude of little green (Green Party), red (SPOe, Social Democrats), and black (OeVP, Conservatives) arrows. In 1990, British graphic artist Neville Brody published the illustration "Place of Heavenly Peace" which shows the actions against students' protests with arrows. Little white arrows, the students, are overrun by huge red arrows, the tanks.
Do FPOe mean to compare themselves to a tank running over the other parties? The graphic works are identical - did FPOe ask Neville Brody for his consent to use his work? Nope, they didn't. Brody now thinks about sueing FPOe.

[9] OEVP is learning hystory
****************************************************************

Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel proudly announced that the creation of a Ministery for Economy and Work will put an end to "class war". Being honest, for a change. As is already evident from appointing a man for the Womyn's Ministery, the butchers are trying to sell us apples.
There is, however, a historic example of mixing the counterparts work and economy - the Nazis did the same.

[10] OeVP and harems
****************************************************************

Racist ideas are rooted deeply also with members of conservative OeVP, as Hubert Pirkner, speaker for security issues for OeVP, proved. He said he was against immigration to reunite families and commented "it's not possible to take along the harem to Europe".

[11] Victory for Boehmdorfer's bureau of lawyers?
****************************************************************

Protests against the FPOe/OeVP government are manyfold and can also be found in the internet. There is a faked FPOe-Site under:
" http://www.fpo.at ", and this satire is so good it has meanwhile attracted a lot of attention. FPOe asked the lawyers' bureau Boehmdorfer to represent them in a file at Vienna Business Chambers to force Nic.at (company who administers all domains with the Austrian at-ending) to take down this domain. Vienna Business Chambers told Nic.at to take down the site within a fortnight; they have appealed against the verdict.

[12] Pro-Lifers in Austria
****************************************************************

With a right-wing extreme/conservative government being in office, Pro-Lifers are gaining ground, too. Already in May 2000, Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel explained what he thinks of the right of self-determination for wymyn. In a letter to a Pro-Lifer, Schuessel wrote: "We (OeVP) have an unanimous respect for life and reject abortions on principle. The basis for a credible politics is the protection of life, and OeVP will strive for respective legal changes." A discussion about the legal situation (abortions are legal within the first three months) has been initiated then by Herr Wymyn's Minister Haupt.

It doesn't come as a surprise that "Pro-Life" feels strengthened: the organisation Pro-Life has bought an appartment which was rented by an abortion clinic, and now tries - with the help of the lawyer's bureau of Minister of Justice Boehmdorfer - to evict the clinic from this apartment. Wymyn who come to the clinic are being terrorized by Pro-Life members, and the manager of the clinic is receiving death threats....

[13] Haider lost again
****************************************************************

When you constantly sue persons you don't like, this can have negative effects at times: Carinthian Prime Minister and former Ex-FPOe-Fuehrer Joerg Haider sued state-owned German TV station ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen - second channel) and lost. He now has to put up with being called a "dangerous political crook".

[14] Haider's Dreams

For the first anniversay of the FPOe/OeVP government, Joerg Haider let Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel (OeVP) know via press that FPOe wants the chancellor's job for themselves after the next election (in 2004).
We are pretty certain that Haider already has an idea regarding who could do that job....

[15] Forstinger vs. Haider
****************************************************************

At last, the new Secretary for Infrastructure, Ms Forstinger (FPOe), came up with an idea of her own, but alas: in connection with cuts in funding, she planned to have second thoughts about already okayed measures for the south of Austria. However, this resulted in a few frowns by her colleague and leader of all Southern Austrians, the Carinthian Prime Minister Joerg Haider. Haider consequently threatenend to dissolve the coalition and humbeld Forstinger in front of the cameras. Then everything turned out nice and dandy, and the projects in question will be funded...

[16] No abuse of authority
****************************************************************

Peter Westenthaler, chairperson of FPOe, was having a hard time trying to swim through the swamp of the informer's affair, when he had an idea for a relief attack: He accused the General Attorney for Public Security, Erich Buxbaum, of deliberatley investigating against FPOe and called this an abuse of authority. Westenthaler reported Buxbaum for this, but now public prosecutors have turned him off. Well, at least they were able to give new life to the fairy tale of poor persecuted FPOe.

Investigations against Joerg Haider (FPOe) and the former FPOe chairperson Ewald Stadler in connection with the informer's affair have been stopped. This is no surprise, keeping in mind that the present Secretary of Justice is the lawyer formerly representing Haider...

[18] No surprise (2)
****************************************************************

On May 1, 1999, the deportee Marcus Omofuma was taken to a plane to Bulgaria in handcuffs and with an adhesive tape across his mouth. He died.
There were investigations against the three police officers involved. Up to now, to medical expert opinions have been handed in: the Austrian expert said - not surprisingly - a heart condition was the cause of death and stresses that a connection between the way Omofuma was treated by the police officers and his death could not be established beyond all doubt.

The Bulgarian expert who first examined the body of Omofuma, said that closing the mouth with adhesive tape and binding his chest was the cause of death.
Now, a German expert has been asked to present a third expert opinion - probably in the hope that a German expert will confirm the Austrian version...
The police officers were suspended initially, but the suspension meanwhile has been called off.
